The repair
The winding mechanism was completely dead when this Donald arrived. Inside we found three cracked plastic gears that stopped the mechanism, plus brittle spring hooks that were at risk of snapping. We fully disassembled the body, matched and replaced the failed gears, lubricated the mechanism, and rebuilt the spring hooks before reassembly. After a few days of work (started 3 May 2026) the wind-up runs again and the feet and tail move as they should. The owner approved sharing this repair story and the video links.
About this item
This is a vintage Illco (ILLCO) Walt Disney Donald Duck wind-up preschool toy. Illco Toy Co. was a common Hong Kong / China maker on the preschool Disney line; the company was acquired by Tyco in 1992. Most of these plastic wind-ups date from the 1970s–1980s, with some later examples carrying The Walt Disney Company branding from around 1987 onward. Related Illco Donald variants include Donald The Musician (wind-up musical) and a rocking-horse wind-up musical. Mickey counterparts include walking wind-ups and Peek-a-Boo crib toys with moving feet or ears. This unit uses a wind-up spring to animate the feet and tail. The shell is plastic with an internal metal spring, plastic gears, and plastic spring hooks. Exact model or year can be confirmed from an underside Illco or “Made in Hong Kong” (or China) stamp when present.
