Button-eyes plush dog — head and foot tears, tongue, and head shape
Vintage button-eyes plush dog
This 30+ year old plush dog arrived with badly torn fabric at the head and foot, a tired little tongue, and a collapsed head shape — we deep cleaned him, remade the tongue, reinforced the head, repaired the tears, and the owner’s button eyes make him even cuter.

The repair
This plush dog is more than thirty years old. The head had badly torn open between the ears, the foot fabric was torn through, and the little tongue was worn past repair. Years of play had also left the head soft and collapsed, while the old foam fill had crumbled. We opened the shell, deep cleaned the striped shirt and terry cloth body, and removed the degraded stuffing. The tongue was remade in fabric to match the original style. Tears at the head and foot were closed and the fabric reinforced, then the head shape was rebuilt with careful restuffing so it holds a rounder, even form again. The owner had already replaced the original eyes with sewn-on buttons — a charming DIY touch that makes him look even cuter — and those stayed in place through the restoration.
About this item
This vintage nursery plush dog is typical of late-1980s to mid-1990s gift and preschool soft toys: long dark-brown floppy ears with a contrasting inner lining, a two-tone tan-and-cream face panel, and a small felt or fabric tongue under a button-style nose. The body is built as an all-in-one character rather than a plain animal with separate clothes — a horizontal orange-and-light-blue striped turtleneck top is sewn as part of the torso, with cream terry-cloth lower legs and feet. Construction is usually polyester plush and terry with foam or fibre fill. No maker label was readable on this example, so the brand is not confirmed; the look matches that era’s striped-outfit nursery dogs from major gift-plush makers.
