Giant Sylvester — wire frame, foot plates, and a fresh restuff
Vintage giant Sylvester the Cat plush
This forty-year-old giant Sylvester could not stand — old stuffing had broken down and the wire skeleton was bent and loose from the foot plates under his feet. We emptied and washed the fur suit, rebuilt and rewrapped the frame, secured the feet with zip ties, restuffed with fresh fill, sewed him closed, and touched up his eye paint.

The repair
Sylvester arrived droopy and unable to stand on his own after more than forty years of display and handling. The polyester stuffing had decomposed into crumbly fill, and the internal wire frame had bent out of shape and was no longer tied securely to the flat foot plates inside his big white feet. We opened seams on the back, arms, and hands to remove all of the old stuffing, then washed the empty fur suit in a bucket. The wire skeleton was stripped of old foam wrap, rebundled and reshaped, and padded with fresh foam. Foot plates were drilled and connected to the frame with zip ties so the feet and skeleton move as one unit. An orange pool-noodle section reinforces the back before fresh stuffing goes in through the back opening. The back seam was stitched closed, black paint on the eyes was touched up where it had worn, and Sylvester stands upright again. A long-form repair video with kid narration was edited for YouTube; story photos were captured from that video.
About this item
Licensed Sylvester the Cat from Warner Bros. Looney Tunes, in the oversized standing plush style Mighty Star produced from the 1960s through the mid-1990s. Mighty Star’s jumbo Looney Tunes line — often cited around 30–38 inches tall — used an internal wire armature and foot plates so figures could stand upright; Sylvester is one of the commonly seen jumbo characters alongside Bugs Bunny, Wile E. Coyote, and Taz. Typical construction: black and white long-pile plush, large white muzzle and paws, red plush nose, and painted or appliquéd facial features. Smaller Mighty Star Sylvester plush (roughly 9–18 inches) are usually soft-stuffed without a standing frame; the life-size / jumbo standing type matches this repair. Tags often show Warner Bros. and Mighty Star with a © date in the early 1970s on many examples — confirm exact year and height from a sewn tush tag when present.
